Hyundai Kona Fuel Consumption Review 2023

Updated Mar 23, 2022

Hyundai Kona became a constant hit when it was first launched in 2018 after a few not-so-successful attempts by Hyundai with the crossover segment. This crossover SUV was able to gain popularity with impressive performance, well-equipped interior, and beautifully styled exterior.

That being said, many buyers are still concerned about Hyundai Kona’s running cost - including the fuel cost - when weighing all the options in the market. In case you are wondering about the fuel efficiency of this car model, here we will explain the details of Hyundai Kona fuel consumption.

Hyundai Kona Engine and Performance

Before getting into the fuel consumption specs, it’s important to know what is in charge of propelling this crossover SUV ahead. The fuel consumption of a car is dependent on the engine powering it to move forward.

This powertrain has met the Euro 4 emission rating. It goes with a 50-liter fuel tank.

Hyundai Kona Fuel consumption

One of the best things about the Hyundai Kona is the fact that it has a high fuel efficiency, which is very well-known of Hyundai cars. In fact, the Kona is able to deliver a fuel mileage of around 20 kmpl. Hyundai Kona fuel consumption is considered on of the best in its segment.

Hyundai Kona fuel economy is astounding

On the highway, the Hyundai Kona can easily return a better fuel efficiency of around 22 kmpl when cruising at 80 kmph. Even during the heavy traffic, the Kona is still able to keep the mileage at a decent number of around 7-8 kmpl. Such impressive mileage can be seen in a more refined and costlier injection engine.

Hyundai’s hot-selling crossover is able to offer a high mileage mostly thanks to the 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that we mentioned above.

This engine employs Atkinson’s Cycle instead of the commonly-used Otto Cycle. For the latter, Hyundai uses a piston to compress the air-fuel mix. After igniting the engine with a spark plug, it leads the mixture to expand and be pushed down on the pitson, churning out power. However, with the Atkinson engine, the process is slightly different as it minimizes the air that escapes during the compression stage, allowing it to enhance efficiency and increase the overall fuel mileage.

The mileage is impressive. However, it comes with a drawback - which is a less powerful performance. With 147hp and 179Nm on tap, the Hyundai Kona’s engine is falling short when compared to the more powerful 2.0-liter engine on the Hyundai Tucson which puts out 152hp of power and 192 Nm of torque. But understandably, the massive body of the full-size Tucson demands a correspondingly capable engine. Given the smaller weight of the Hyundai Kona, such performance is adequate.

In fact, the 2.0-liter engine of the Hyundai Kona is good enough to push the crossover from idle to 100 kmph in just 9.8 seconds.

Apparently, the specs of this engine are not as impressive as the turbocharged engine powering other subcompacts like Chevrolet Trax or Coolray, it surely beats most of the crossovers within its segment and price range with the performance and fuel economy.

Overall, the powertrain setting allows the Hyundai Kona to deliver a powerful performance, accelerate quickly, and confidently cruise on a long drive.

Hyundai Kona Fuel Consumption Verdict

With a good fuel consumption, Hyundai Kona is a great companion in the long run. It also strikes as a fashionable car with an aggressive and youthful look. Moreover, it also offers a very comfortable interior with roomy space and many comforts features to add to the mix.

There are a few things that Hyundai could have done better with the Kona. For example, the Kona’s interior doesn’t look as exciting as the exterior. Another thing about the interior is that it has small legroom, which makes it more of a four-seat car rather than a full five-seat. The same impression applies to the boot storage with a capacity of 19.2 cft.

That being said, Hyundai Kona meets all the expectations for a decent crossover. If you are looking for a stylish car with decent performance as well as fuel efficiency, Hyundai Kona is definitely the choice.
