Hyundai Kona Review: The Best Choice For Modern Urban Life

Updated Jul 21, 2022

Since its first debut, the Hyundai Kona has received a million compliments because of its design language. Besides, the performance and its competitive price are also factors to consider. Is it worth owning this car model in 2023? Check this Hyundai Kona review to find your answer.

Overview

Hyundai Kona was first introduced in 2017, but it didn't get much attention. In 2018, this model made its way thanks to the fresh, modern, sporty design and its competitive price.

In 2019 and 2020, Hyundai Kona kept its position as the best-selling SUV in the B segment, surpassing its biggest competitor - Ford EcoSport.

Although Hyundai Kona 2023 hasn't had many upgrades compared to its intuitive version, it is still the best choice for urban families in the Philippines.

Exterior

The Hyundai Kona is 4,165 x 1,800 x 1,550 mm, with a ground clearance of 170 mm. Generally, Hyundai Kona is suitable for urban areas with these standard dimensions.

The Hyundai Kona features the cascading grille style, also applied to Hyundai Tucson and Hyundai Santa Fe. However, the manufacturer pays attention to the details with the black rhombus pattern inside and a chrome-plated design outside for greater effects.

The turn signal lights are formed subtly and uniquely, while the headlights keep their bold and strong outlook.

Interior

Hyundai applies the Human Machine Interface design with the Fly-monitor center display like other flagship cars to bring convenience for the drivers and passengers.

All seats on the 2.0AT versions are covered with felt, while the other version uses a leather coat. In addition, the back seats can bend with a ratio of 60:40 to increase the cargo space when needed.

Performance

The Hyundai Kona engine offers Nu 2.0 MPI with inline 4 Cylinder and 16 Valve DOHC to create the max horsepower output of 147 hp and the max torque output of 179 Nm.  This engine is powered by gasoline. And, the fuel tank can contain up to 50L.

Safety

Like other lines of Hyundai, the Kona owns many standard and upgraded safety parts. The vehicle warning system in blind spot BSD, the reverse sensor, and the front-rear sensor are selected carefully for the high-end versions of this model.

Technology

The entertainment system in the Hyundai Kona 2023 shows its outstanding performance to other competitors with a built-in Arkamys high-end sound processor with 24 bit DAC decoder. Other features include Apple CarPlay, AUX/USB/Bluetooth technology, and six speakers.

Hyundai Kona Pros And Cons

Pros:

  • Modern, youthful, dynamic design
  • Interior and exterior equipment to meet the needs
  • Modern safety system
  • The most powerful engine in the segment
  • Smooth and stable operation

Cons:

  • The rear seats have poor ventilation;
  • The middle seating position is limited;
  • The headlights are low and get dirty easily, negatively impacting the driver's vision on night trips.

Hyundai Kona vs other SUVs in the B segment

Before Hyundai Kona was introduced in 2017, Ford EcoSport and KIA Seltos were the most outstanding players in the B segment. Until 2023, they are still serious rivals.

Hyundai Kona vs Ford EcoSport

The Kona highlights the front with its sophisticated design language. At the same time, the EcoSport focuses on the bold, simple, and practical front, even though many Hyundai Kona reviews show that customers love its elegant but sporty look.

The headlights of Hyundai Kona 2023 stand out with Bi-LED technology that can adjust the steering angle, while its competitor has a Projector HID. However, the EcoSport gets a score with a built-in smart sensing lock which allows customers to open/close the door with a touch.

The SUV from Hyundai beats its rival with more than 50 hp, almost 100 Nm, and a more smooth experience. As a result, the Hyundai Kona has higher fuel consumption than the EcoSport, relatively 6.6L/100km and 5.8L/100km.

Hyundai Kona vs KIA Seltos

KIA Seltos is more masculine and tougher than the Kona regarding the design. However, the inside space of Hyundai Kona is bigger than KIA Seltos to give a better driving experience.

When comparing their performance, Hyundai Kona is absolutely the winner with higher specs in both horsepower and torque output. Accompanied by its compact design, the crossover runs at the Hyundai Kona top speed with ease and versatility.
